Why we decided to build on the Mina Protocol

Following our recent announcement of being awarded a grant from the Mina Foundation, we are excited to delve deeper into the advantages of building on the Mina Protocol. This blog highlights the opportunities that lie ahead and why we chose to develop on the Mina Protocol.

The grant we received is to build a state-of-the-art zero-knowledge proof solution, namely zkp-ID, with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) functionality. This groundbreaking solution will be seamlessly integrated within the Lumina DEX, a decentralized exchange (DEX) being built on the Mina Protocol. We are implementing the key learnings from the functional prototype we recently launched where we combined privacy and compliance for payments.

From our experience, developing on Mina offers several distinct advantages:

Expanding Applications with zkApps

One of the key features of Mina Protocol is its powerful zkApps. These applications have the potential to transform a number of industries with its ability to program interoperability and user privacy natively into dApps. With the next upcoming Mina hardfork set to create a vast ecosystem of zkApps, our platform is poised to provide the necessary tools and services required by an upcoming zero-knowledge ecosystem.

Through zkApps, we can enhance privacy, data control, and selective sharing of information across diverse sectors. The integration of zkApps within Lumina DEX showcases the broad scope and adaptability of this technology.

Simplified Development with SnarkyJS

One key aspect that sets the Mina Protocol apart is its utilization of SnarkyJS, a Typescript-based library for creating general-purpose zero-knowledge programs. Unlike other projects that require advanced zero-knowledge coding skills and complex integration work, Mina's adoption of SnarkyJS allows developers to seamlessly and easily build privacy applications on the Mina Protocol.

This simplifies the development process, removing the inherent complexities associated with cryptography. By reducing the barriers to entry, the Mina Protocol empowers developers to unlock the full potential of zero-knowledge proofs. Mina’s use of a TypeScript framework offers a developer-friendly approach accessible to a vast pool of 12.4 million JavaScript developers worldwide.

Empowering Interoperability and Decentralization

While other protocols also recognize the importance of interoperability and decentralization, Mina protocol's dedication sets it apart. The protocol's vision of minimal barriers to running a node and true decentralization with plans to allow anyone to run a node in a browser aligns perfectly with our goal of creating an inclusive and accessible network.

Clients can easily verify Mina’s finalized state by using a small proof. This allows individual nodes, including those using mobile devices to actively participate in the network. Recursive ZKPs enable construction of trustless bridges between Mina and other chains. This cross-chain interoperability expands the reach of zkp-ID.

Conclusion

The partnership between etonec and the Mina Foundation represents a significant step forward in the evolution of decentralized technologies. With the grant from the Mina Foundation, we will integrate the learnings from our functional prototype and build a cutting-edge zkp-ID solution within the Lumina DEX. By leveraging zero-knowledge proofs, prioritizing regulatory compliance, and upholding user privacy, we are paving the way for a secure and innovative future in the crypto industry.

Join us on this exciting journey as we unlock the full potential of zero-knowledge proofs, revolutionize private and compliant transactions, and foster a new era of trust and empowerment.
